UN chief adds voice to calls for release of Kashmiri prisoners in IOK

United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has called for a very close look at the continued confinement of Kashmiri prisoners in Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir amid growing cases of the deadly Coronavirus.

The spokesman to Secretary General, Stephane Dujarris in a media briefing in New York said that all member states need to take care of prisoners during the pandemic.

As for prevailing situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir, he said the UN Secretary General believes in political solution to the issue.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has also welcomed the joint statement by six international human rights organizations, calling on India to immediately release all arbitrarily detained prisoners and restore full high speed internet access in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui said the joint statement rightly underlines that measures to combat Covid-19 must respect human rights of every individual.

Urgent release of political prisoners, human rights defenders and all those arrested in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir after 5 August 2019 is therefore imperative, she added.
