US reservations on Daniel Pearl murder case seem natural: FM Qureshi

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has on Saturday said that the US reservations over Daniel Pearl murder case seem natural.

The foreign minister said in his statement that the Sindh government has decided to challenge the Sindh High Court (SHC) verdict in the case. Detaining the accused for ninety days under Public Safety Act.

“It is now up to the appellate forum either to uphold the SHC decision or declare it null and void. Daniel Pearl was a leading journalist, who was first kidnapped for ransom and subsequently killed.

“Fingers were raised against Pakistan and immense criticism was hurled from across the globe as soon news regarding murder of Daniel Pearl came out.

“The accused in Daniel Pearl were arrested and faced trial as a result of which three people had to face imprisonment. While central figure Sheikh Umar was handed down death penalty.

“The accused had a right to appeal and the SHC, while acknowledging this right. Suspended their sentence pronounced by the anti-terrorism court Hyderabad, setting all the three accused free. Converting Ahmed Omer Sheikh’s capital punishment into seven-year imprisonment.

“Pakistan rendered unmatched sacrifices and the entire nation fought a long war against terrorism. Defeated this menace with collective efforts.”
